Cold Turkey

July 23, 2015 by patty lauren Leave a Comment

“Free cheese is always available in mousetraps.” – Unknown

Do you ever try to bargain with yourself? You know – “I’ll just have a small slice of this chocolate cake”, “I’ll just have one drink,” “I’ll go workout tomorrow.” We all have. Some of us are better bargainers than others. I’ve played that game with myself for years. Usually it’s where relationships are concerned. We all have our bargaining weak spots – relationships, food, working out, alcohol, etc. It’s a power play against our will and our weaknesses.

Recently I needed to stop at the grocery store to pickup 3 things: egg whites, tuna, and a sweet potato. I only had $3 in cash because I lost my debit card (more on that story coming another day – it involves running out of gas. Don’t ask.) so I was having to be very selective in my purchases. Somehow between the tuna and the egg whites my body found itself on this aisle:

IMG_4452

I think they purposely put this type of stuff on the end of the aisle so you can’t help but see it and stop when you walk by. Let me preface all this to say I don’t think I have EVER bought a whole package of Oreos to keep at my house. I don’t keep sweets in my house, period. Maybe some chocolate but that’s it. I enjoy baking and cooking but I’m not someone who has a snack cabinet or anything like that. However, s’mores are one of my favorite little treats ever (I went through a phase where I had one every night before bed) and I am extremely intrigued by these s’mores Oreos. I’m more of a Reeses gal myself, but these days anything and everything hydrogenated and sugary is looking reeeeeeal good.

You see, when you dial certain things down or completely out of your life sometimes there is this thing that rears its ugly head. That little thing is called temptation. Ah, yes. Whether it’s my body tempting me to eat a whole package of Oreos or my mind tempting me to sabotage my sanity, temptation is rampant. And, even more so when you are trying to be “good.” Whatever that means to you. The temptation is always 1,000% stronger and harder to fight when you are on the straight and narrow. This could apply to hundreds of things – pick your personal poison.

If you read Gone Girl you know I am following the IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros) lifestyle right now. Love it. Could I eat a few Oreos and stay on track? Absolutely. Could I eat a few Oreos and stop there? Eeehhh. Not on this particular night. I would probably have bargained with myself and eaten way more than a few and then told myself I’d make it up some other way. I know myself pretty well these days and weak PL was looking at those s’mores Oreos like she looks at a new pair of high heels on sale.

So – I walked away. I said no. I didn’t bargain. Because, bargaining often leads to losing. I’ve come too far to tempt myself. Do I eat sweets? Of course. But, I stay within my macros. Am I going to do this forever? Probably not, but I have some super specific goals right now and I have worked far too hard and far too long to bargain my way into a few moments of pleasure. Because, isn’t that really what temptation and bargaining with ourselves is about? A few moments of pleasure for something that won’t last? Something that feels good in the moment but ultimately leaves us feeling empty and more broken than before?

Cutting bad things out of your life is never easy. Sometimes we try to keep “a little” bit to hang on to – because it feels good, because it’s comfortable, because we’re having a bad day and a “little bit” of our old life makes a feel a little better. Temporarily.

Unfortunately, the real temptations in life for most of us aren’t food but are things that are more damaging to our mental and emotional well being than our physical well being. They hurt our hearts and impede our growth. We take ten steps forward only to look back in a moment of weakness and wake up to find ourselves five steps backwards. For most of my adult life when I have found myself in these types of situations it has taken me a long time to finally get to the cold turkey point. I waver, I struggle, I bargain, and I “what if” and “maybe if” in my mind until I’m physically exhausted.

Once I get to the point of never looking back something always clicks inside of me. Once I’m done, I’m done. Are there moments of temptation? Absolutely. Are there moments of struggle? Yes. But, they get so much easier. Promise. It’s worth it – to not look back, to not give in, to stand your ground, to be strong – to find out who you REALLY are, not who you think you’re supposed to be.

When you’re tempted to go back “just a little” to something that you know you are going to have a difficult time picking yourself up from – run the other way. Remember why you have moved on. Remember why you started. Remember why you are stronger than you were before.

There are no “do-overs” in this life – don’t waste your days on weakness. You are stronger than you could ever imagine if you just remember to not give up, give in, or give out.

Boobs, Booties, and Babes

April 19, 2015 by patty lauren 2 Comments

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with what I’m about to say and I respect that.

Body shaming. Hashtags. Instagram. Facebook. Twitter. Pictures. Flesh. Plummeting value. Plummeting respect. Plummeting relationships.

I used to think the multitudes of married female bloggers who wrote about “modest is hottest” (I still think that’s the stupidest phrase I’ve ever heard) were just writing those posts because they were jealous and miserable. They didn’t want their husband looking at another woman because they felt bad about themselves. And, really… that’s not it at all. I get it now.

As human beings we need to start protecting each other more. We need to stop pitting ourselves against each other as women and women need to really think about lording their sexuality over men as some sort of tool and power trip.

It’s not a good feeling to know your boyfriend/husband is looking at half naked or naked women. I don’t care how much self confidence you have or how pretty you are – it’s humiliating. In fact, I think the more self confidence you have the worse it hurts. You want them to want you. And, to want to look at you.

What’s the point of showing your cleavage/butt/lingerie, etc. to the world? What are you gaining from it and what message is it sending to the man in your life? That his eyes are not enough? That you need tens or hundreds or thousands of other men’s eyes on you, too?

I’m not talking about the pictures of physical progress if you’re into working out, etc. or the occasional bikini picture… I’m talking about the onslaught of cheapening the female body. Of cheapening our relationships. Of exploiting our personal lives.

Maybe you’re single and you are saying, “I’m single and beautiful and I like the attention! I’m not hurting anyone.” Are you not? Are you not hurting your value in someone else’s eyes? You are giving a little bit of yourself away with each picture… something less for the man that will one day be in your life.

Men are always going to look. And, they’re going to appreciate. And, that’s great. But, at the end of the day no matter what any of us say… we want something special. A man wants to know you haven’t posted a hundred pictures of your half naked body for other guys to look at. They want to know you have reserved some part of yourself for them.

People especially from my generation is very familiar with the teachings of our youth of giving pieces of yourself away physically. Now we are in a culture of giving away ourselves digitally. What’s special anymore if everything is so easily accessible and there at the click of a finger? We are turning into women who want to be “Liked” more than we want to be adored and loved.

Don’t settle for the temporary click. Value yourself. Value the man’s heart you want to value yours. Let us all remind each other we are each individual works of beauty.

Wishing You a Very Merry Fanatical Game Day!

December 12, 2014 by patty lauren Leave a Comment

You may or may not have realized at this point that I’m a rooter for my home state’s UT Volunteers. I may not understand everything football, but I have really learned to get into the spirit and enjoy watching. You also may know we’re going Bowling this year – The Taxslayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida to be exact. How exciting is that! I’m pretty excited for the January 2nd showdown.

I may not be able to hop the next plan to sunny FL to catch the game in some sunny 60 degree weather, but I will be rooting them on from home. Of course that brings me to game day wear. This year, I am so excited to find the massive amount of game wear from Fanatics!

Fanatics has everything a sassy football (or baseball or basketball or whatever your favorite game is!) gal needs for all her tailgating and entertaining desires. Just when I think I’ve seen everything, I find even more cute things! I can’t wait to pick up some summer tops and a swimsuit this summer! What’s even better are their prices are really reasonable and they have some awesome sales going on right now. Their selection of MLB (and so many more) baseball caps is huge and I love the variety.

I thought it would be fun to put together a little Bowl game day look to get myself ready and looking forward to the new year and hopefully a WIN for our VOLS!

Screen Shot 2014-12-12 at 8.40.25 PM

The Details:

The cute and collegiate baseball hat is from Fanatics (who has so many great color choices and variations for your favorite team!)- I love wearing baseball hats with a ponytail or even with a longer hairstyle. They can pull together a sporty chic look in seconds!

That uber comfy puffer vest? You got it – Fanatics! Isn’t that the cutest? I love the high collar. Perfect for those colder game days or cozying up at home.

White tee is from J. Crew – love their worn in feeling tees. Always my first choice in comfort!

My favorite blue jeans are Gap’s 1969 model. Always stylish and chic.

One of my favorite things to do with a sporty look is to incorporate a little bit of bling. The necklace is a find from TJMaxx.com.

For this look, boots would be cute, but I also think flats are really chic – especially in a more low key look. I chose my favorite Taylor Oka-Bs in Blush.

And, last but not least – every woman needs her favorite handbag at her side to complete her look. Yours can be a clutch, a cross body, or a larger bag. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but one that suits your style. My everyday essential (and one I feel needs it own post soon) is my Speedy 30. Class never goes out of style.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into my style!

xoxo, patty lauren

Cheetah & a Pop of Color

October 4, 2014 by patty lauren Leave a Comment

True to form, Friday brought a more dressed up look than the beginning of the week. The weather has become quite nippy in the mornings so while I had originally planned on wearing a skirt for the end of the week, I fell back on a comfortable pair of pants. I think I remember muttering, “I love pants!” while I was getting ready. I like to talk to myself in the mornings… don’t you?

I stayed with a lot of deep browns and neutrals for Friday, but I punched the outfit up by sporting a pair of my favorite brushed suede heels in a bright turquoise. Adding a pop of color to an otherwise muted outfit is an easy way to pull an outfit together in a sassy and memorable way – especially if it’s with shoes! I guarantee you will get compliments on your fun style!

top: JCrew

similar match: Macy’s Charter Club tee

pants: Larry Levine

similar match: Larry Levine Slim Leg Pant

shoes: Jessica Simpson

almost an exact match: Jessica Simpson suede heels

scarf: Jones New York (regular scarf that I made into an infinity style)

scarf: Target ruffle infinity scarf

The Monday Blues

September 29, 2014 by patty lauren Leave a Comment

Fall is right about the corner – It’s practically on the doorstep! And, to celebrate the last Monday of September… My first Outfit of the Day post. Enjoy!

xoxo,

patty lauren

I find myself wanting to be a little more casual on Mondays and Fridays – the start and end to each week. It seems dressy up is a little easier as the week goes on, at least for me.

photo 3

I brought out the softest corduroy top from The Gap I used as a layer over a comfy white tank. The corduroy gave just enough warmth for this brisk Monday and the sweet pearl snaps lent it some extra class.

The brown pants are a closet staple and I’m not ashamed to say they’re Forever 21. I have a difficult time finding pants, but when I find a pair I like I wear the heck out of them. LOFT, J. Crew, and Gap pants are my favorite, but I snagged these great skinny knit pants last year and they go with almost everything. Plus, you can’t beat a $15 pair of work pants!

photo 4

The boots are Kelsi Dagger and see themselves on my feet are a regular basis in the fall, winter, and spring. The heel is just high enough to satisfy my sky-high love but comfortable enough to wear all day walking around the office and out in town.

photo 1-2

I love, love, love combining metals – my rings are a stack mix from a local jeweler in California, sterling silver bands from easy and a gold tone brushed shimmer ring from H&M. My two toned boyfriend inspired watch came from a local shop in Savannah and I wear it almost every day. At least until the Apple Watch comes out ::eeeek::

photo 2

One of my most favorite rings ever. It looks gargantuous in this picture, but it’s the perfect oversized ring. And, that sparkle – ow ow ow! Great find from an Ann Taylor outlet.

How To Wear It:

Corduroy layering top

White tank top

Skinny pants

Leather booties

Boyfriend inspired watch

Oversized crystal ring

Silver stackable rings

Brushed shimmer ring
