The Sand Chronicles Part 2: The Beginning of Something Beautiful

April 14, 2015 by patty lauren 1 Comment

(Shoutout of thanks to all of those people who text me all of the grammatical and spelling errors I make. ha!)

It’s 8am. I’m on the balcony of the resort, listening to the ocean, watching the waves, drinking coffee and eating oatmeal, and writing. I am now officially sorry to anyone who I have scoffed at in public or private when they talk about how awesome the beach is. Now I know what you are talking about and it is wonderful. Remember way back when I packed up GK and took off to Little St. Simons Island in December? That was my first time to have an actual beach trip. But, of course, it was in December so it wasn’t exactly bikini and bellini weather.

It has seemed like I was the only person who hadn’t been to the beach in the summer. Seriously. And, I’m 30. And, live in the South. Something is wrong with this picture. Naturally, I blame my parents. Joking. But, seriously – why did we never go to the beach?! I knew plenty of kids growing up who went to the beach every summer but not me. Oh, no. I was too busy going to things like basketball camp (you don’t even want to know) and hoeing our summer garden. Because what kid doesn’t want to pick giant zucchini and have their mother spray them down with a hose to imitate a summer full of sunshine and water while they’re running around in a tank top and too-high shorts? It’s the best we could do. One day I’ll share some unfortunate pictures of this said summer.

All that to say – if I ever have my own family, we ARE going to the beach.

Back to the beach. So, if you read TSC Part 1 you know all about how our fun little adventure started. We finally made it to bed sometime after 3am, but I was bound and determined to be up for the sunrise. I think E was planning on snoozing longer since we just had the longest and most adventurous day ever but she did say, “I’ll go with you. Just wake me up.” You betcha I’m going to wake you up! I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve. I could barely sleep, I kept checking my alarm to make sure it was on so I wouldn’t miss this natural and daily occurence that just seemed more magical when you’re standing on the shoreline with sand squishing between your freshly polished toes (or not, for you guys).

Naturally, as any 30 year old woman who is really a kid inside would be, I was up before my alarm and throwing on clothes. I grabbed my camera and we headed down to the sand. This must be the feeling women get when they get proposed to – that feeling of never knowing if this day would ever come and now that it’s here you’re one big bundle of nerves and emotions and it’s a little overwhelming. Of course, I could be totally wrong but I imagine that’s the way it is.

The sun hadn’t begun to peek out from behind the clouds but thin, sharp streams of bright pink etched the sky. The blue hue melted in with the billowing clouds and encircled shades of orange and pale yellow. The sun was coming. It was a new day. There were seagulls and jellyfish. Moms and Dads. Kids and dogs. Husbands and wives. People alone. People together. For me, every sunrise and sunset is beautiful so I won’t say this was the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen but it was one of the most special. I am in such holy reverence of our world and our Creator. I’ve already said the feeling of being tiny and insignificant was humbling. And, truthfully, we could all use a little more humbleness. I know I sure can.

We practiced some yoga poses (kudos to the fit beach babes who make it seem super easy!) E’s go-to was The Tree pose while I sunk down into a warrior pose. Ah, stretches.

We walked and walked and I think I could have walked forever. We headed back to the villa and I got my little writing area together. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you would need so I brewed a fresh cup of coffee and make myself some breakfast. I could get used to this.

I do want to include some information about our wonderful resort and how I found it! I’m a big fan of HomeAway. I’ve used it several times and always had a good experience. Our villa is at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort. Amy, the owner I rented from, has been so wonderful to us and I would highly recommend checking out her listing if you think about visiting the area!

This is opening weekend at Hilton Head… it’s officially the beach season. Which means the poolside restaurant is open, the pool is calling my name, and the sand and I need to become a little more familiar…

Until next time… xoxo, patty lauren

17 miles

July 25, 2014 by patty lauren 1 Comment

If you’ve read my blog before you may remember my short and sweet post about my vacation to St. Simons Island. Oh yes, the place where Grace Kelly almost hung herself off a banister in town or the most perfect sandwich I ever ate literally flew away. And, yes, I mean LITERALLY – not in the white girl “I literally almost died” way, but the appropriate way. But, there was so much I didn’t get to share – because suicidal puppies and flying sandwiches make for more interesting stories while you’re on vacation – until now!

I’m convinced St. Simons is one of America’s best kept secrets. Or, it seems that way. St. Simons is one of those unpretentious, tranquil vacation spots you only see in movies. I had a childhood friend who used to go to St. Simons for vacation with her family every year – they were “rich” by my family’s standards and the thought of a place called St. Simons seemed very posh in my ten year old mind.

I never have gone into the reason why I took the beach trip… it’s a long story, but I touched on some of it in my earlier blog days. Sometimes things happen to you and you realize you have to stop waiting for life to happen. You start making your own history, your own memories, your own adventures… and you stop waiting on other people to make those things happen for you.

So, I packed up the girl and we hit the road… of course, after a stop for some Starbucks. Sorry – you can’t suck all my typical white girl behavior out of me, society!

The drive was about seven hours – which to go to the beach is not bad in my book. I packed up the pooch and left the day after Christmas. The drive was routine… Atlanta, pretty scenery, crazy drivers, but as soon as you drive through New Brunswick you become transported to what seems like a step back in time to a simpler life. Spanish moss drips from seemingly everything, sweeping you further into the island’s welcoming embrace. Palm trees stand at attention as you drive towards the warmer destinations. The air is different. You suddenly become different.

For my accommodations, I chose The King and Price Golf Resort.

kingandprinceI chose King and Prince for a few reasons – first of all – location, location, location! King and Prince is located right on the beach with amazing views of the ocean coupled with an array of amenities that make it the hottest spot to stay on the island. Also, during the time I booked my trip the resort was undergoing major reconstruction in some parts and they were offering some amazing deals! The resort has multiple pools, tennis courts and is, of course, pet friendly!

During the morning and afternoons, I would take Grace Kelly for a walk on the beach. One of my favorite things about the trip was our daily beach walks… not only because there was such a relaxation and ease with the comfort of the ocean, but because of all the puppies!! I think the phrase: “I saw more dogs than children!!” was enthusiastically used.

Some people have a part of them that dreads beach vacations – no matter how excited you are, you know you do not look forward to screaming children, inconsiderate tourists, and not being able to find your way around. St. Simons has some of the friendliest tourists and locals alike I’ve ever found. What is so great about where we stayed was the short walk to Main Street. It’s about a one mile walk from King and Prince to downtown which you can easily amble along on foot or by bike.

Grace Kelly and I walked down the strip of beach one afternoon (after the flying sandwich incident) and visited the lighthouse next to Neptune Park.  There is a small fee to go inside, but we enjoyed the beauty of the historic landmark from the park.

Neptune Park

The Pier Village and main Street is a perfect package and I touched on some of its great assets in my original St. Simons post – it’s the right amount of places to shop, eat, and browse without being overwhelmed by touristy extravagance. I started a tradition in St. Simons – visiting a local book shop and buying a book. Old, new, doesn’t matter. Some people collect shells or pieces of jewelry – I think making traditions during travel makes the memory a little more tangible.

Another wonderful landmark and place to visit in St. Simons is Christ Church and the surrounding grounds. I drove there (although biking everywhere on St. Simons is perfectly acceptable and highly encouraged!) on a drizzly late afternoon. Christ Church is one of the most beautiful and historic churches I’ve seen – it reminded me very much of some of the small churches I visited in Ireland.

St. Simons is a treasure packed into just 17 sq.  miles. Whether you are looking to plan an exciting trip full of fun, golfing, and surf or a relaxing trip coupled with scattered adventures, St. Simons is truly one of the most enchanting spots in the South.

St. Simons Island

December 28, 2013 by patty lauren 3 Comments

What happens when you finally stop waiting for life to happen? There is a big backstory to this trip that I want to get into at some point, but for now… Just the fun stuff.

“Oh, a seven hour car ride won’t be that bad!” … That’s what I thought when I first planned my vacation this year. And, in reality, it’s not bad, but it’s not good either. The first four hours went by pretty quickly but my back started to contort and mishaps on me the last three. Grace Kelly (my dog) is great company and all, but the poor girl can’t speak so that’s a real drag sometimes.

Alas, we arrived in St. Simons last night about an hour later than expected because of a traffic jam outside of Atlanta. Still, it was early and I hadn’t eaten anything but stocking stuffer trail mix so I went out in search of some food. I settled on Southern Soul Barbeque – the restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Drives, close to the resort, and what southern girl doesn’t like some BBQ on a Thursday night? The restaurant is settled back off of the road, wooden picnic benches wait for patrons under a large overhang… Colored lights and nostalgic memorabilia decorate the unassuming inside. It was one of those places you know is going to be good before you taste anything. Their BBQ was tender and had its own flavor instead of being smoked to death and coming back to haunt me for the next 12 hours. Their mac and cheese was some of the best I’ve ever had – somehow they manage to put these decadent swirls of creamy cheese into the mix without it being overpowering or sickening. They have their own special selection of sauces ranging from sweet and savor to hot and spicy. I settled on the Sweet Georgia sauce – it’s tomato based, but very reminiscent of a honey mustard. It was sweet, but strong. I’m making myself hungry again… I would highly recommend checking Southern Soul if you get down to the area.

Today has been a little bit of an adventure. Those little crazy things that always seem to happen to only me made sure to pop up in the day. When I first booked the hotel, of course I was sure Grace Kelly would be welcomed and it would be a good fit for us to stay and for her to be out on the beach, etc. What I didn’t expect was the whole town seems to be extremely dog friendly. I’ve seen more people with dogs than with children. So, I haven’t done a post about my dog but here is what you need to know: I’m obsessed. She has her own Instagram (IG: gracekellythecavalier), she goes everywhere with me… Typical crazy dog lady stuff. Anyway, I digress. So, I go downtown today to the St. Simons Pier area that also is home to their lighthouse museum. There is a park overlooking the ocean, mossy trees to be climbed, and two rows of shops and restaurants. The first shop we went into, Ronne’s, was very welcoming to us and let us know all of the shops were dog friendly. The shop keeper suggested a couple of restaurants for us to try as well. Everyone I talked to was so welcoming and kind and just loved all over Grace Kelly – it made visiting all of the shops very relaxing and enjoyable.

Okay, so the crazy stuff. The downtown area has a strip of shops that are essentially tiny little beach cottages… There are probably 8 or so of them on a porch. Very cute. I had checked them out and stepped off the last porch step and called for Grace Kelly to follow me because I could tell she wasn’t walking behind me. I turn around to see her dangling by her NECK off this porch. God knows how this stuff happens, but I about lost it. I had a dog die that way when I was a kid – don’t ask, it was traumatic as you can imagine. Somehow she had managed to get her leash wrapped at the top of the step and then did this Kung Fu Panda maneuver that rendered her hangman style. It was something out of a movie with her little body hanging at least a foot off the ground… I’ve never moved so fast in my life. Maybe my dog is depressed and she did it one purpose… We’ll never know.

I decided to check out one of the suggested restaurants, the 4th of May, on the corner of the strip. All of the restaurants have outdoor seating which works out great when you travel with your pet. The waitress suggested the Fried Green Tomato BLT… is it weird I’ve lived in the south my whole life and never have eaten a fried green tomato until today? What have I been missing!? That sandwich was probably one of the best things I have ever eaten… Ever. The breading couldn’t have been more perfect – it was thin and crisp… It held the tomatoes perfectly… Not messy or soggy or overly juicy. The bacon was thick and crisp. They added the right touch of mayo – just enough to give some flavor instead of swimming in it and dark, leafy lettuce instead of a cheap slice of iceberg. It was decadent for a great little southern style sandwich. I ate half and took the rest with me… Which would have made the perfect dinner except for what happened next. I’m at a crosswalk… waiting… I’ve got a take out box, Grace Kelly’s leash, and a small bag in my hands. This doesn’t sound complicated, right? Right… It wasn’t, until the wind decided to be a show off and literally take the box out of my hand. And, that wasn’t embarrassing enough as all these cars are sitting at the intersection. No, then the box has to open in mid air and my sandwich comes flying out and smacks the pavement – sending bacon and a fried green tomato to their gravely deaths. I was pissed because my sandwich was gone, but I was also saw people staring at me with their mouths hanging open at what had transpired. I should have just walked away, but no, I had to run out into the middle of the road and PICK UP THE SANDWICH and the box. I couldn’t leave it there… So here I am, scrounging the remnants of my food off the road and dragging Grace Kelly behind me while I do it. Thank God there was a trash can next to me so I could pitch my mess and move on and not look anyone in the eye.

… I don’t know what I will do tomorrow, but I wish for no more spilled food or the attempted suicide of my dog.
